Creating A Nursery That’s Stylish for You & Comfy for Baby
Last month, I became an Aunt (yay!) and watching my sister and brother-in-law get ready for my niece really got me thinking. One of the things that really intrigued me was the nursery. There are so many things to take into consideration when getting a room ready for a new baby. Where do you start? How do you know what your baby will like? What if you don’t know if it’s a boy or girl?! How do you make it safe?!?
Step 1: Pick a room! Once you have a designated space, it’ll be much easier to start envisioning what you want it to look like. At that point, you’ll also know your limits and dimensions so you can start thinking about everything else.
Step 2: Pick a theme! This is where you get to be creative – the theme can be anything from a simple color to a character to a sport. The nursery theme is important because this is where your baby’s story begins. They will spend so much time in their room, taking in their surroundings, growing and learning! If you are a parent who likes to be surprised, fret not! You don’t NEED to know the gender to come up with a great theme – there are gender neutral colors and themes just as magnificent as “gender specific” ones! *Pro-Tip: If you find you’re having trouble settling on a theme, try searching bed sets for infants first, and work backward based on what you like!
Step 3: Furniture! You have a room and a theme, now it’s time to pick your baby’s new furniture. An important thing to remember when furniture shopping is not only functionality, but growth – your baby WILL grow, and you will need to adjust the furniture accordingly. A great option is a convertible crib, which means it grows with the baby and has the ability to be converted in to a toddler bed as well as a real bed (depending on the crib.) If you can find a convertible crib set with matching dressers, even better – everything will match and it will all serve its purpose long after your baby is no longer a baby.
Step 4: Textiles! If you haven’t done so already, it is now time to choose bedding. Most babies’ bedding sets have matching EVERYTHING – from lamp shades to curtains to mobiles and more – making mom and dad’s jobs that much easier. One thing to take into consideration is that this is important to do BEFORE you paint, you don’t want to paint the room and then fall in love with textiles that completely clash with the new paint job.
Step 5: Flooring! This final step is super important to consider when designing a new home for your baby – the last thing you want is your precious bundle of joy spending time on anything sub-par. While there are many options for flooring, cozy area rugs are the most popular option for nurseries (understandably). Babies spend the majority of their young lives on the floor, so why not make it as comfortable as possible?! Area rugs are also the perfect way to tie together a room – with different colors, patterns, shapes and textures to choose from, your options are almost limitless! You can choose a fluffy, soft shag like the ones from our Carmela or Arctic collections or you can use the rug to bring bright colors into your nursery, like the ones in our Splash or Marquee collections.
And VIOLA! Just like that, you and your baby have a new place to grow, together!
